| Distinctive Willamette Valley Pinot Noir... And Wines from Burgundy? Tres Magnifique! Pinot Noir from two continents! Join us as we visit Scott Paul Wine Cellars... Being an artisanal producer of fine Pinot Noir in the Willamette Valley is not an easy task. After all, the Pinot Noir grape is one of the hardest to grow and ripen successfully. By carefully choosing the vineyards he works with, Scott Wright's winemaking regimen is hands-off, gentle, and non-interventionist. The techniques he uses and philosophy are shaped by Burgundian winemaking traditions. The wines of Scott Paul are distinctly different than many others in the valley. For those of you who enjoy a fine red Burgundy, Scott Paul's wines are a great fit for you. To quote Scott "Our mission is to hand-craft small lots of exquisite Oregon Pinot Noir. To us this means wines of elegance and finesse - wines imbued with sensual qualities." Their wines are more about subtlety, fragrance and bringing out the nuances of a vintage and expressing what the vineyard gives to them. To this end Scott makes just three Pinot Noirs, La Paulee (the 2006 received 90 points from Wine Spectator), Audrey (their flagship Pinot) and a Cuvee Martha Pirrie which is crafted as a younger drinking wine and made with grapes from Shea, Stoller and Ribbon Ridge Vineyards. We sampled the 2007 La Paulee this day and it was showing nicely with good acidity, a wonderfully pleasing mouth-feel and showing light spice on the finish. Very nice! This would be enough for most winemakers, but not Scott. In 2006 he started Scott Paul Selections, a Burgundy import company. They currently import nearly 100 wines from over 15 producers. Selections of Cremants, Champagne, White and Red Burgundies include great affordable offerings like the Philipe Chavy Bourgogne Blanc ($18 and quite a hit with all of you who tried it) up to Grand Crus from Clos Vougeot, Grand Echezeaux and Romanee Saint-Vivant, these from several artisanal producers. We served a bottle of the 2006 Domaine Jean-Marc Millot Clos Vougeot for guests recently and it was divine. A big thank you to Scott for hosting us on a Sunday... Fine wine and great company. Who could ask for more! This review marks our 5th year of sharing winery visits with you on Northwest Wine Fan. Our first was a visit to Bergstrom at Thanksgiving in 2004. My, how time flies! These and other fine wines are available from Northwest Wine Fan. Contact us at 541-948-4350 or by email at northwestwinefan@msn.com |
